(Chris and his trusty steed, Winchester, celebrate Movember in style)

While the newly configured manly month of November comes to a close, we join with others who hope that we won?t confine our efforts to raise awareness of men?s health issues to just one month of the year!

To that end we have selected out a few titles, with the original publishers notes, that may be of interest to men and women alike who wish to learn more about such issues as prostate health, mental health, masculinity and fitness.? This is just a start, so if you think of any others, let me know, I?d like to start a ?men?s studies? reference for our collection!?

I Don't Want to Talk About ItI Don?t Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression,?by Terrence Real

Twenty years of experience treating men and their families has convinced psychotherapist Terrence Real that depression is a silent epidemic in men ? that men hide their condition from family, friends, and themselves to avoid the stigma of depression?s ?un-manliness.? Problems that we think of as typically male ? difficulty with intimacy, workaholism, alcoholism, abusive behavior, and rage ? are really attempts to escape depression. And these escape attempts only hurt the people men love and pass their condition on to their children.

Why Boys Don't TalkWhy Boys Don?t Talk ? And Why it Matters:?A Parent?s Survival Guide to Connecting With Your Teen,? by Susan Morris Shaffer and Linda Perlman Gordon

Adolescent boys are notoriously uncommunicative. Unfortunately, too many parents equate not talking with ?not feeling?, and, as authors Susan Morris Shaffer and Linda Perlman Gordon explain parents who make that assumption end up validating only the most superficial aspects of their sons. It arms parents with proven techniques for communicating with their adolescent sons and re-establishing strong emotional bonds with them.

Iron JohnIron John: A Book About Men, by Robert Bly?

So what exactly does it mean ?to be a man?. In this now iconic read, poet and translator Robert Bly offers nothing less than a new vision of what it is. Bly?s vision is based on his ongoing work with men and reflections on his own life. He addresses the devastating effects of remote fathers and mourns the disappearance of male initiation rites in our culture. Finding rich meaning in ancient stories and legends, Bly uses the Grimms fairy tale ?Iron John,? in which the narrator, or ?Wild Man,? guides a young man through eight stages of male growth, to remind us of archetypes and?long forgotten-images of vigorous masculinity, both protective and emotionally centered. Simultaneously poetic and down-to-earth, combining the grandeur of myth with the practical and often painful lessons of our own histories, Iron John is a rare work that will continue to guide and inspire men-and women-for years to come.
