Bridge Energy Farms Down Norwegian Licenses to Cairn

Bridge Energy announced Wednesday that its wholly owned subsidiary Bridge Energy Norge has executed an agreement with Agora Oil & Gas, which is 100-percent owned by Cairn ?Energy, for the farm-down of a 15-percent working interest in production licenses PL497 and PL497B on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

After the transaction Bridge Energy will hold a 15-percent working interest in the two licenses. Cairn will as a consideration for the transaction carry a substantial share of Bridge Energy's well cost. The main prospect in the licenses, Geite, is scheduled for drilling in Q3 2012.

?

Alfred Kjemperud, Managing Director of Bridge Energy Norge, commented:

?

"We are pleased that Cairn, through Agora, has joined us in the PL497 licence which demonstrates support for the technical potential of the acreage. Through this farm-out, Bridge is able to re-allocate its exploration capital over a wider number of prospects in support of one of our key corporate objectives. The 15-percent interest in Geite, which Bridge retains, represents a substantial target and gives upside potential which could have a material value impact in the event of a discovery."

BCS gets boot in favor of 4-team playoff

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The best way to determine a major college football champion seemed so obvious to so many for so long. Just have a playoff.

Now the people in charge of making that decision are on board, too.

Come 2014, the BCS is out. Playoffs are in.

A committee of university presidents approved a plan Tuesday for a four-team playoff put forward by commissioners of the top football conferences.

For years, the decision-makers had balked at any type of playoff because they said it would diminish the importance of the regular season. If only two teams had a chance to win a championship in the postseason, even one loss could be too many. That made for some high stakes regular-season matchups. As recently as 2008, Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive proposed the type of plan adopted Tuesday, and it was quickly shot down.

Four years later, minds changed.

"It's a great day for college football," BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock said. "As soon as the commissioners realized they could do this and protect the regular season, the light went on for everybody."

The move completes a six-month process for the commissioners, who have been working on a new way to determine a major college football champ after years of griping from fans. The latest configuration is certain to make even more money for the schools than the old system ? and it still won't satisfy everyone. Some will think it's too small and, yes, there are some who liked things just the way they are.

"There were differences of views," Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said. "I think it would be a serious mistake to assume it was a rubber stamp."

Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman was the most notable holdout. He had said that he preferred the status quo or a tweak of the Bowl Championship Series. Perlman said the playoff still wouldn't be his first choice, but he was not going to stand in the way of progress. After the commissioners presented their proposal to the presidents, it took the CEOs about an hour and a half to come to a decision.

"This is the package that was put forth and we will strongly support it," Perlman said.

Instead of simply matching the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 teams in a title game after the regular season, the way the BCS has done since 1998, the new format will create a pair of national semifinals.

The BCS has been a constant target for criticism. Lawmakers have railed against it. A political action committee was formed dedicated to its destruction. The Justice Department looked into whether it broke antitrust laws. Even President Obama said he wanted a playoff.

Now it's a reality.

No. 1 will play No. 4, and No. 2 will play No. 3 on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The sites of those games will rotate among six bowls. The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., is guaranteed a spot, and the to-be-determined site of the newly formed bowl created by the SEC and Big 12 is likely to be another, Slive said.

The other current BCS bowls ? the Orange, Sugar and Fiesta ? are not yet guaranteed spots in the rotation, but will get first crack at bidding for them. The Cotton Bowl, played at the $1.1 billion Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, has long wanted to be part of the BCS and will no doubt push to be a part of the rotation, possibly as host to the Big 12-SEC game.

The winners of the semis will advance to the championship on the first Monday in January that is six or more days after the last semifinal. The first "Championship Monday" is set for Jan. 12, 2015.

The site of the title game will move around the way the Super Bowl does, with cities bidding for the right to host.

The teams will be selected by a committee, similar to the way the NCAA basketball tournament field is set. The men's tournament has 68 teams, and 37 at-large bids.

The football committee will have a much tougher task, trying to whittle the field down to four. This season, 125 schools will play at the highest level of college football.

Among the factors the committee will consider is won-loss record, strength of schedule, head-to-head results and whether a team is a conference champion. The selection committee will also play a part in creating matchups for games at the four sites that do not hold a semifinal in a given year.

"I think it's tremendous progress," said Washington State coach Mike Leach, a playoff proponent. "Five years ago there wasn't even dialogue about a playoff. Instead of diving in the water, they dipped their toes in. I think it's' going to be ridiculously exciting and it's going to generate a bunch of money. I wish they dived in."

Leach predicted that the playoff field would eventually grow.

Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez, on the other hand, was happy to keep it small, and wants it to stay that way.

"I may be in the minority. I think we had a pretty good thing going," he said. "If it stays at four I think it will be fine. Think it will be pretty exciting."

No one has put a hard number on it yet, but this new format figures to more than double the TV revenue of the current BCS and Rose Bowl contracts. Those pay out about $155 million annually.

The commissioners want to lock in this format for 12 years with a television partner. The current BCS deal with ESPN runs through the 2013 season. The new format will be presented to potential TV partners in the fall, starting with ESPN.

There are still some details to work out, such as who will be on the committee and how exactly the money will be distributed among the conferences. But everybody in charge is on board.

While lower divisions of college football already have a playoff, the highest level has for decades used bowls and polls to determine its champion. Those days are coming to an end.

"A milestone that's good for college football," Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford called it.

And a long time coming.

Google Play hits 600,000 apps, 20 billion total installs

Google during its I/O keynote hit a symbolic milestone: it now has 600,000 apps in the Google Play Store. As well, the store is clearly hitting a brisk pace in adoption, with 1.5 billion downloads every month and 20 billion since Android began. That stacks up fairly well to Apple's own claims, although not universally: it's just short of the App Store's 650,000 apps, but Apple can still point to 30 billion total downloads. Google also hasn't said how many apps are explicitly tablet-friendly versus 225,000 iPad-oriented apps. Either way, Google can say that it has largely erased the app quantity deficit, and that's no mean feat.

Ortiz hits 399th HR as Red Sox shell Jays

By HOWARD ULMAN

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:32 p.m. ET June 27, 2012

BOSTON (AP) - The Red Sox scored six runs in the first inning against a wild Ricky Romero, David Ortiz hit his 399th career homer and Boston beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-4 on Wednesday for its fifth straight series win.

Adrian Gonzalez had three RBIs and Mike Aviles added two as the Red Sox improved to 9-2 in their last 11 games.

Jon Lester (5-5) fell behind 1-0 in the first when he allowed a run-scoring single to Colby Rasmus, but the Red Sox scored all the runs they needed in the bottom half as Romero (8-2) threw 16 balls on his first 19 pitches.

Boston went ahead 7-1 in the second when Ortiz and Cody Ross walked on 3-1 pitches and Gonzalez hit an RBI single.

Jose Bautista hit a solo shot, his major-league leading 25th homer of the season, off Lester in the fourth. But the Red Sox struck back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Gonzalez singled in one and Aviles drove in the other.

Ortiz made it 10-2 in the fifth with his 21st homer of the year. His 399 career homers are tied for 49th with Andres Galarraga and Al Kaline. Duke Snider is 48th with 407.

Lester, who was just 1-2 in his previous six starts, retired eight consecutive batters before running into trouble with two outs in the sixth. He allowed a double to Bautista followed by Edwin Encarnacion's 22nd homer. Ben Francisco then singled, but Yunel Escobar flied out to end the inning.

Lester pitched seven innings, striking out four with no walks, seven hits and four runs.

Romero was in trouble from the start. He had averaged 4.4 walks per nine innings this season but walked a total of just nine batters in his last four starts.

On Wednesday, he struggled to find the plate and left after giving up six walks, seven hits and nine runs in three-plus innings.

He walked leadoff batter Daniel Nava on four pitches then threw two balls to Dustin Pedroia before his first strike. Pedroia doubled in Nava and the next batter, Ortiz, walked on four pitches before Romero started Cody Ross with two more balls.

Ross then singled, loading the bases, and Gonzalez reached on an error by third baseman Encarnacion, allowing Pedroia and Ortiz to score. Will Middlebrooks followed with an RBI groundout, Aviles singled in one run and Darnell McDonald singled in another, making it 6-1.

Notes: Toronto, in last place in the AL East, dropped two games behind Boston ... Romero was 4-0 in his last seven starts but had given up at least four runs in each of his last six games. Wednesday's start was his shortest of the season and the runs allowed were his most.... Bautista leads the majors with 16 road homers. ... RHP Henderson Alvarez, who left Monday night's 9-6 Toronto win with right elbow soreness, is expected to start on Saturday after undergoing an MRI that shows some inflammation, manager John Farrell said.

Spain's crisis turns families into squatters

Xavier Cervera / Panos for msnbc.com

Tony Cortes, who has been out of work for almost three years, and his partner Ana Valderrama have occupied an empty home in Terrassa, Spain, with their young daughters Jennifer and Ariadna.

By F. Brinley Bruton, msnbc.com

TERRASSA, Spain -- Ana Valderrama and Tony Cortes do not look like squatters.

The?suburban apartment they've illegally occupied since December is free of clutter.?Its stone floors shine while two?poster-sized pictures of daughters Jennifer, seven, and Ariadna, 11, hang on gleaming white walls.

Twelve months ago, life was very different.

Valderrama, 36, and Cortes, 38, had both been out of work for more than two years.?Unable to maintain payments on their 102,000-euro (around $128,000 at today?s exchange rates) mortgage, the couple?lost their home in this commuter town about 12 miles north of Barcelona.

"I was very depressed when I realized I may be on the street with my two girls," Cortes told msnbc.com.?"It?s a depression the whole family feels, a sort of Chinese torture."

Desperate to ensure they had a roof over their head, Valderrama, Cortes and 10 other families took possession of an empty apartment building. But life is still precarious. The family of four?now lives on 641 euros ($800)?a month in public assistance and they could face eviction at any time.

Destitution
While sophisticated and fun-loving Barcelona serves as the country's showcase to the world, Terrassa is?among the?many towns hiding Spain's shame: Despite boasting Europe's fourth-largest economy, hundreds of thousands have been forced into destitution by the country's?housing crash.

Photos: Faces of Spain's economic crisis

Many Spaniards?now exist on the margins of a society that just a few years ago promised them easy access to cars, holiday homes, trips abroad and regular tickets to professional?soccer games.

The crisis?was born out of?a mighty housing and construction bubble that saw house prices triple between 1995 and 2007. They've?fallen by at least a quarter since then.

'The country is on its knees': Ireland grapples with economic collapse

About one out of every four people in Spain is without a job, according to government statistics. However,?the large so-called "gray economy" mitigates the effects of unemployment, the IMF says.

In 2010, court evictions hit 100,000 ? four times the total?in 2007. About 200 homes are repossessed every day?across Spain, according to the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) campaign group.

These repossessions continue despite a voluntary ethical code signed by many?banks that is intended to delay evictions by two years in cases of families with no income.?Still, an estimated 20 percent of the country?s unoccupied homes are now owned by banks, The Economist reported.

You don?t have to look very far to see the toll the crash has taken on people who have worked all their lives. ?

Before the crisis Juan Antonio Pache, 67, did not think of himself as poor.

His construction business once employed nine people. He borrowed money to build a house on land he already owned, and a few years later he borrowed more to extend it.

Xavier Cervera / Panos for msnbc.com

Juan Antonio Pache, 67, who lost a construction business that once boasted nine employees, is now receiving help from Catholic organization Caritas.

Pache's company thrived, he said, until 2007 when he noticed a fall-off in new business. By April 2008, income had decreased "vertically," he said.

"I made proposals, proposals and proposals but no projects came," he said. He fell behind on payments to Spain's equivalent of Social Security. Soon he could not afford his mortgage payments of around 3,000 euros a month.

Now the bank has seized?his house and land. He has lost his business and lives with his son in Sabadell, a city northwest of Barcelona.? ?

He doesn't receive a state pension, and his wife has moved in with family in another town.?

"All I've done is work. I've worked day and night on the highways. And after so much work I have no house and no pension," he said, standing very straight. "I don't know what kind of country this is."

Greek tragedy: Economic crisis sparks brain drain

With banks in a fierce competition for new customers and mortgages easy to come by, some borrowers doubtless took on too much debt during the boom years. But even as the crisis hit, politicians assured the public that all would be well.

In 2008, former Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero declared that Spain had "perhaps the most solid financial system in the world."

Infant malnutrition
The fact the crisis is taking a toll in a relatively wealthy part of Spain surprises those who work with the most vulnerable.

"We have noticed a huge increase in people asking for food assistance ? around three times more than a year ago," said Ester Soto, a manager at Terrassa's Red Cross homeless shelter.

Xavier Cervera / Panos for msnbc.com

Aida Abello and Ester Soto work at a Red Cross homeless shelter in Terrassa, Spain.

Fraying family networks and swinging cuts in social programs, as well as the worsening crisis, are the likely reasons for this growth, she said.

More startlingly, the Red Cross is also seeing evidence of infant malnutrition for the first time in decades, Soto added.

"And this is not a poor town," she said.

Spain's financial plight has taken center stage for European Union leaders who are tackling long-term plans for closer fiscal and banking union in a bid to strengthen the euro's foundations, after bailouts for Greece, Ireland and Portugal failed to end a 2-1/2-year old debt crisis.

On June 9, the European Union stepped in with the promise of a bank-bailout plan of up to 100 billion euros ($125 billion) and Spain formally requested the rescue on Monday. The original announcement failed to calm nerves as investors worried that it might not be enough and a wholesale bailout of Spain could be in the offing.

Spain to seek bailout; up to $125 billion on table

Paul De Grauwe, a prominent economist and professor at the London School of Economics, said that not only would the bailout announced in early June probably be inadequate, it was unlikely that European Union?s response would help ease the suffering of millions of Spaniards.

He also said the European Union's decision-making process, which is propelled by economic powerhouse Germany, is deeply undemocratic.

"Today it is a German politician who decides about Spain," he said. "They couldn?t care less about the Spanish unemployed. They will only care about unemployment if it is German unemployment. They will only care about youth unemployment if it is German youth unemployment."

Germany grows weary of being Europe's crutch

'I want to work'
Spanish youth unemployment stands at 50 percent, the highest in Europe. Such statistics are a fact of life for university student Marisol Martin.

"I want to work, have money, be independent and have my own place," the 19-year-old said. "I go on the Internet, send out resumes and resumes but nothing."

The only opportunities for people like her, she said, are unpaid work experience positions or poorly paid jobs in bars or restaurants.

So she is taking English classes and hopes to one day leave Spain.

Xavier Cervera / Panos for msnbc.com

Marisol Martin, right, has been encouraged by her father to leave Spain. Her friend Laia Moreno also has little optimism about the future in her homeland.

"My dad?s told me and my sister that what I have to do is get out and go to England," she said.

Martin's friend Laia Moreno, 18, lives with her mother. "I would like to have my own place and my own life," she said.

"I wanted to be a teacher," she adds. But for now, that dream has died and she's trying to get a driver's license so she can deliver pizzas.

'I had to sell everything'
Life isn't much better for many immigrants, with the unemployment in these communities hovering at around 35 percent. ?

Wilson Lopez left Ecuador more a decade ago in search of a better life for his wife and son. Nine years ago, he took on a mortgage of 109,000 euros, on which his wife Isabel and he made interest-only payments, Lopez said.

"I paid my mortgage loyally for nine years," the 63-year-old native of Guayaquil said during a protest organized by the PAH in Barcelona.

CSM: As Europe peers into economic chasm, Africa is rising

In 2010, Lopez lost his job as a security guard in a local hotel.

"I had to sell everything ? my wife's jewelry, our television, clothes ? everything," he said.

Lopez would like to hand over the apartment's keys to the bank and have done with it, he said. But he can't because most homeowners in Spain can be pursued for mortgage debt even after their properties have been repossessed.

Xavier Cervera / Panos for msnbc.com

Wilson Lopez, 63, is originally from Ecuador.

Instead, Lopez felt forced to extend the loan for another 40 years. He pointed out wryly that he will be over 100 when it runs its course.

"The government works for the banks but it does not help the people," he said.

This sort of disillusionment has grown as people impacted by the crisis watch the government bailing out banks while imposing widespread cuts to public services.

Amid this backdrop, the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) has sprouted branches throughout the country.

In the last six months, PAH has suspended or delayed dozens of evictions by protesting outside foreclosed homes and helping people negotiate with their banks. Their highly public campaign has fed a wave of defiance and forced the government to promise relief for borrowers.

But the organization is not "superman," warned PAH organizer Guillem Domingo.

"This country?s politicians need to step-up, be courageous," he said.

Spanish bailout may prove to be stopgap measure

Spain's "indignados" or M-15, which helped spark the global "Occupy" movement, is also flexing its muscles. While huge public protests have largely died down, the group, along with the PAH, has seen an opportunity in the country's estimated one million empty homes for the growing number of homeless.

And on June 15, activists filed a case against the former management of one of the largest lenders Bankia, whose partial nationalization helped push Spain to seek the EU bailout.

The mass movement has helped raise tens of thousands of euros via crowdsourcing to bring a case against the bank.?

Ghost towns tell the story of Ireland's faded dream

The apartment illegally occupied by Cortes and Valderrama?is owned by CatalunyaCaixa, a regional bank. The unofficial residents' offers to pay rent to the bank have so far gone unanswered, PAH organizer Domingo said.

CatalunyaCaixa did not respond to a request for information or comment on their plans for the apartment building.

Still, defying the powers-that-be has energized Valderrama and Cortes.

"Every day that passes I feel stronger," Valderrama said. "I have gone through so much, and every time you do you become more powerful."

"I lost my shame many years ago," Cortes added and smiled.

Diet Soda Makes Overeating - HEALTHY HOUSE

Diet soda often be an option for people who are dieting are not willing to leave the soft drinks. This drink is claimed to have low calorie content. However, research shows that the effects of diet soda can actually make obesity.

Researchers from the University of California and San Diego State University in the United States found that diet soda can lead to overeating which can lead to obesity. When saccharin into the bloodstream, chemical reactions occur in the brain that makes it happen.

Prior to the conclusion, the scientists tested 24 healthy young adults. Half of the participants are drinking diet soda, while the other half drank sodas infrequently. They conducted a series of brain tests while given low doses of saccharin and sugar water. The participants were then asked to rate the taste.
When participants are given a drink to swallow, brain scans showed that different parts of the brain light up in between the two groups of volunteers. It appears that when people who are drinking diet soda with artificial sweeteners water consumption, activation of brain areas associated with reduced food motivation.

At a certain level, the brain can sort out the calorie-free sweetener with sugar. However, the brains of people who often drink diet soda, at least once a day, becomes confused and can not distinguish between them. If this happens, your calorie intake and energy consumption can not be calculated. As a result, the person thought to be more to eat.

According to Susan Swithers of Purdue University, United States, the different responses to sweet taste is based on the frequency of drinking diet soda is not much of a concern. "Normally, the brain is used to connect between sweetness and calories they contain to regulate food intake. However, when the bonus calorie sweet foods, the brain becomes not know what to do," she said.

As a result, the body learns to ignore the sweet taste in terms of predicting the energy content in it. This is associated with increased risk of obesity

'Trust' hormone oxytocin found at heart of rare genetic disorder

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? The hormone oxytocin -- often referred to as the "trust" hormone or "love hormone" for its role in stimulating emotional responses -- plays an important role in Williams syndrome (WS), according to a study published June 12, 2012, in PLoS ONE.

The study, a collaboration between scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the University of Utah, found that people with WS flushed with the hormones oxytocin and arginine vasopressin (AVP) when exposed to emotional triggers.

The findings may help in understanding human emotional and behavioral systems and lead to new treatments for devastating illnesses such as WS, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and possibly even autism.

"Williams syndrome results from a very clear genetic deletion, allowing us to explore the genetic and neuronal basis of social behavior," says Ursula Bellugi, the director of Salk's Laboratory for Cognitive Neuroscience and a co-author on the paper. "This study provides us with crucial information about genes and brain regions involved in the control of oxytocin and vasopressin, hormones that may play important roles in other disorders."

WS arises from a faulty recombination event during the development of sperm or egg cells. As a result, virtually everyone with WS has exactly the same set of genes missing (25 to 28 genes are missing from one of two copies of chromosome 7). There also are rare cases of individuals who retain one or more genes that most people with the disorder have lost.

To children with WS, people are much more comprehensible than inanimate objects. Despite myriad health problems they are extremely gregarious, irresistibly drawn to strangers, and insist on making eye contact. They have an affinity for music. But they also experience heightened anxiety, have an average IQ of 60, experience severe spatial-visual problems, and suffer from cardiovascular and other health issues. Despite their desire to befriend people, they have difficulty creating and maintaining social relationships, something that is not at all understood but can afflict many people without WS.

In the new study, led by Dr. Julie R. Korenberg, a University of Utah professor and Salk adjunct professor, the scientists conducted a trial with 21 participants, 13 who have WS and a control group of eight people without the disorder. The participants were evaluated at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Because music is a known strong emotional stimulus, the researchers asked participants to listen to music.

Before the music was played, the participants' blood was drawn to determine a baseline level for oxytocin, and those with WS had three times as much of the hormone as those without the syndrome. Blood also was drawn at regular intervals while the music played and was analyzed afterward to check for real-time, rapid changes in the levels of oxytocin and AVP. Other studies have examined how oxytocin affects emotion when artificially introduced into people, such as through nasal sprays, but this is one of the first significant studies to measure naturally occurring changes in oxytocin levels in rapid, real time as people undergo an emotional response.

There was little outward response to the music, but when the blood samples were analyzed, the researchers were happily surprised. The analyses showed that the oxytocin levels, and to a lesser degree AVP, had not only increased but begun to bounce among WS participants while among those without WS, both the oxytocin and AVP levels remained largely unchanged as they listened to music.

Korenberg believes the blood analyses strongly indicate that oxytocin and AVP are not regulated correctly in people with WS, and that the behavioral characteristics unique to people with WS are related to this problem.

"This shows that oxytocin quite likely is very involved in emotional response," Korenberg says.

To ensure accuracy of results, those taking the test also were asked to place their hands in 60-degree Fahrenheit water to test for negative stress, and the same results were produced as when they listened to music. Those with WS experienced an increase in oxytocin and AVP, while those without the syndrome did not.

In addition to listening to music, study participants already had taken three social behavior tests that evaluate willingness to approach and speak to strangers, emotional states, and various areas of adaptive and problem behavior. Those test results suggest that increased levels of oxytocin are linked to both increased desire to seek social interaction and decreased ability to process social cues, a double-edged message that may be very useful at times, for example, during courtship, but damaging at others, as in WS.

"The association between abnormal levels of oxytocin and AVP and altered social behaviors found in people with Williams Syndrome points to surprising, entirely unsuspected deleted genes involved in regulation of these hormones and human sociability," Korenberg said. "It also suggests that the simple characterization of oxytocin as 'the love hormone' may be an overreach. The data paint a far more complicated picture."

In particular, the study results indicate that the missing genes affect the release of oxytocin and AVP through the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. About the size of a pearl, the hypothalamus is located just above the brain stem and produces hormones that control body temperature, hunger, mood, sex drive, sleep, hunger and thirst, and the release of hormones from many glands, including the pituitary. The pituitary gland, about the size of a pea, controls many other glands responsible for hormone secretion.

Overall, the researchers say, their findings paint a very hopeful picture, and the study holds promise for speeding progress in treating WS, and perhaps Autism and anxiety through regulation of these key players in human brain and emotion, oxytocin and vasopressin.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the McDonnell Foundation.

Family dinner for 17: How many meatloaves did Mom make?

The family dinner was a daily ritual for the Walsh family's 15 kids, with "Mommy Barbara" Walsh at the kitchen sink helm, soaking up "the together thing."

By Mary Beth McCauley,?Correspondent / June 24, 2012

Barbara and Bill Walsh were adherents of the daily family dinner ritual ? even if it meant feeding their 15 kids in shifts. They now go to the homes of their children for dinner instead of cooking for everyone. This story is part of the cover story project on family dinners in the June 25 issue of The Christian Science MonitorWeekly.

Ann Hermes / The Christian Science Monitor

There are plenty of Walsh?family dinner stories. That's because there are plenty of Walsh kids ? 15 of them, born between 1949 and 1968 to Barbara, a former runway model, and Bill, a World War II veteran and insurance company executive, who married in 1948.

But for Barbara, the stories meld into an overall sense of having spent a great deal of her life at the kitchen sink. A family friend once observed that she and her husband were affectionately known as "Mommy Barbara" and "Mr. Walsh." And that's pretty much how it worked ? she oversaw the food and he, a former naval officer, made sure things didn't get out of hand.

Barbara's kitchen, in a huge, 10-bedroom house on Philadelphia's Main Line, was big enough to hold a giant picnic table, with room for extra chairs on the ends. There was always at least one high chair and often a bassinet. The six left-handed children sat along one side. Though Barbara says she likes to think that she instilled formal table manners in her brood, their number precluded a single conversation. Plus, the group was usually in some kind of spilled-milk minicrisis.

But the older siblings helped little ones, and everyone learned over time. As their mother puts it, "I think when they went out they knew how to behave."

During the heavy sports years, there were two seatings in the big kitchen ? early for the babies, who couldn't wait, and late for the athletes who had after-school practice.

"I'd have to sort of pace the food," Barbara says. Though she recalls being tired at night, she loved family life. "We were all in the kitchen together, and it was nice having everyone there." Even with 15 mouths to feed, she says, the only time she felt overwhelmed was the day she brought her first baby home.

Meals weren't fancy. Milk came from giant metal milk drums. Hot dogs with SpaghettiOs ? the far and away favorite dinner ? was served weekly. There was meatloaf ? always an extra in the freezer to send to another family "in case someone died" ? and a weekly eight boxes of cookies. "When they were gone, they were gone," says Barbara.

On Sundays, the children's friends were invited for a barbecue. And from their earliest days, Barbara and Bill went out to dinner by themselves once a week. "Half the time we could barely afford it," she recalls, but she strongly advocates it still with her own children now that they are parents. "The two of you were there first," she reminds them.

The Walsh family dinners have long outgrown the dinner hour. They number at least 50 now, and require at least five tables. They'll gather over the July 4 weekend for Bill's 90th birthday for what promises to be four days and 15 families' worth of songs, skits, video presentations, and athletic events. One night, they have 45 tickets to the Phillies. Their matriarch will be back at her kitchen sink ? in a manner of speaking ? soaking up what she most loves in life: "It's the together thing."

F*** Yeah! Supreme Court Tosses Out ?Vague? FCC Indecency Fines Against Fox And ABC

censorshipPublic airwaves may be one step closer to becoming an indecent wasteland of swearing, nudity, and violence?a victory for First Amendment-lovers everywhere. Yesterday, the Supreme Court unanimously threw out fines against Fox and ABC for airing brief expletives and nudity, arguing that the FCC's rule against "fleeting" indecency was too vague.?The narrow decision won't change the content of broadcasting anytime in the near future, but it has given the FCC more latitude in what it considers indecent and renewed the conversation about whether indecency rules are relevant in a world of Netflix, Hulu, and 24-hour access to the pornographic universe.

Study: E-book library borrowing takes slow pace

NEW YORK (AP) ? E-book readers have been relatively slow to borrow digital works from the library, frustrated by a limited selection and by not even knowing whether their local branch offers e-releases, according to a new study.

The Pew Research Center published a survey Friday that reports around 12 percent of e-book users 16 years and older downloaded a text from the library over the past year. Earlier in 2012, Pew issued a study showing that around 20 percent of adults had read an e-book recently.

Simon & Schuster, the Hachette Book Group and other major publishers have limited e-book offerings to libraries or refused to make any available, citing concerns that the ease of free downloads would hurt sales. Lack of awareness may be another factor. Around 60 percent of those 16 and older couldn't say whether their libraries had e-books.

Pew's Internet & American Life Project study, conducted with nearly 3,000 respondents between Nov. 16 and Dec. 11, 2011, suggests that library patrons trying to borrow digital texts have been deterred by the selection and by not having the right e-book device. Just over half of respondents said their library did not have the book they were looking for and nearly 20 percent found that the device they owned could not receive a given title.

Nearly half of those who have not borrowed an e-book said they would be "very" or "somewhat" interested if they were lent an e-reading device with a book already downloaded.

Officials from the American Library Association have been meeting with publishers in an effort to work out a system that would satisfy both sides. On Thursday, Penguin Group (USA) announced a pilot program with the New York and Brooklyn library systems that will make e-books available six months after they first go on sale. Penguin had suspended its e-book program with libraries last year.

"I applaud Penguin's decision today to re-start e-book sales to libraries so that we may again meet our mutual goals of connecting authors and readers," library association president Molly Raphael said in a statement.

One statistic reported by Pew should please publishers and librarians: Those who borrow e-books from libraries tend to read more ? 29 books a year ? than readers who don't use the library (23 books). But library card holders also are more likely to borrow, as opposed to buy, a book compared to those without library cards.

Overall, around half of those surveyed said they had bought their most recent book. Around 15 percent said they had borrowed a copy from the library.

HBT: Tulowitzki to undergo groin surgery

The Rockies finally know what?s ailing Troy Tulowitzki; he was diagnosed with a kind of athletic pubalgia most commonly known as Hockey Goalie/Baseball Pitcher Syndrome after another examination Wednesday. He?ll undergo surgery Thursday, and there is no timetable for his return.

Hockey Goalie/Baseball Pitcher Syndrome is one of a number of different versions of athletic pubalgia, which are injuries that involve tears in the groin areas. My 15 minutes of research indicates that it takes about eight weeks to recover from the surgery, meaning Tulo should be able to make it back at some point this season, even if it?s just for September.

With Tulowitzki sidelined, the Rockies likely just went from probable to definite sellers in advance of the trade deadline. They?re currently 25-41, putting them 16 games back of the Dodgers in the NL West.

Tulowitzki was hitting .287/.360/.486 with eight homers and 27 RBI before he landed on the disabled list May 31. His absence has caused the Rockies to slide Marco Scutaro from second base to shortstop, with Chris Nelson taking over at second.

(AP) ? Andrew Garfield's Spidey sense is tingling ? and convincing.

Garfield, the latest actor to play Spider-Man, makes people believe he really is a spider ? even before he gets into the costume, the new film's director said Monday at the gala British premiere for "The Amazing Spider-Man."

The word the producers of the reboot, the director and Garfield's co-stars use to describe him is "committed."

Director Marc Webb said he was impressed with the actor's focus, emotional gravitas, comedy chops, and especially the way Garfield conveyed his transformation from teen-ager to spider.

"He was so committed to the physical dimension of the character, like he really was focused on feeling like a spider was taking over him and keeping that DNA alive and every time I would see him, his elbow would be moving a certain way and he was embodying the, like he really was, it felt like he was being taken over by a spider ? and when he got in the suit it really paid a lot of dividends," he explained.

The 28-year-old Garfield said he didn't go as far as method acting.

"I don't know what that word means, but I definitely was dedicated to it and wanted to make sure that we did our job as well as possible and made sure that the character is served in the way that it should be," he said.

One of the ways in which he devoted himself to becoming Peter Parker and his alter-ego, Spider-Man, was following an intense fitness regimen for six months, six days a week, plus three months of rehearsals and training for his stunt work.

Co-star Emma Stone thinks Garfield's love of the superhero since he was 3 years old makes "his dedication and protection of the character totally apparent throughout the movie."

"The Amazing Spider-Man" follows the origin story of Peter Parker, the orphan boy who gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gains unusual powers, and is the fourth film in the series.

The franchise reboot tells the story of how Parker ? a teenager with a chip on his shoulder, raised by his aunt and uncle ? tries to discover what happened to his parents and faces off with his father's former research partner, Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), in the form of his villainous alter ego, The Lizard.

The film also tackles Parker's love story with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy, whose father is the very police captain tasked with catching Spider-Man.

Martin Sheen and Sally Field play Parker's well-meaning uncle and aunt, who do their best to keep him from going off the rails.

Garfield was keen to follow their guidance ? as actors and mentors.

"They're incredible, they're just fine actors, and people who live well and live purely and with love, and that's very inspiring 'cause you know it's rare that you find someone who's not only a fantastic actor but a fantastically beautiful person," Garfield says, noting he took "more life advice than acting advice" from them.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" in 3D opens on July 3 in U.K. theaters.

Plymouth North baseball falls in Div. 2 state final

All good things must come to an end. That end for the Plymouth North baseball team came Saturday in the Division 2 state finals at the College of Holy Cross in a loss to South Hadley. The score of the game was 5-0.

?We lost the final game, but I?m always going to remember the journey we took to get to the game more than the game itself,? Blue Eagle Head Coach Dwayne Follette said. ?I?m going to remember that win over Dighton-Rehoboth in the section finals for the rest of my life. This group of seniors was unbelievable. They absolutely willed themselves to win big games and get this far. The goal was to get to the state finals again and they achieved that goal.?

?We came into the title game on our longest winning streak of the season. Unfortunately, in that game we ran into the perfect storm,? Follette added. ?We made some mistakes and South Hadley played perfect baseball. Give them all the credit in the world. They deserve to be the state champions.?

Plymouth North did rack up seven hits off South Hadley starter Jordan Page, but they were all singles, and he made sure they were never bunched together. Page only allowed one runner to get to third base.

One of those hits came right away as Cody Holmes started the game with a single to left. He was thrown out trying to steal second.

South Hadley took the lead early with single runs in the first and second innings off Plymouth North starter Jake Stearns. The senior left-hander threw 30 strikes in his 35 pitches, but they were in places where the Tiger batters were able to put them in play. Two hit batters didn?t help his cause.

Patrick Sears? RBI single gave South Hadley an early 1-0 lead. The team was on the hunt for more runs with the bases loaded and one out, but Stearns settled down to strike out Thomas Spring and then Joe Ciolek to end the threat.

?Stearns was throwing strikes, but the hitters put on some good at-bats against him,? Follette said. ?They hit some really good pitches.?

Stearns? day ended in the bottom of the second inning when Mike Croke singled down the right field line to score Michael Paleologopoulos and make it a 2-0 game. After a couple of pitches to the next batter, Follette had seen enough and summoned Alex Rozak from the bullpen to take over. Rozak did the job and struck out Sears to keep it a two-run deficit.

Ryan Moskos singled and Holmes walked as North threatened in the third inning. Dougherty moved them both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but Page got Connor Follette to ground out to short before any damage could be done.

Rozak walked three in the third but got out of the inning unharmed. The same, however, could not be said for Dougherty. With two out and the bases loaded, Connor Sheridan grounded to second. Dougherty, the base runner and the baseball arrived at the same place at the same time, and the results were not good. The runner, Luis Agrait, collided violently with Dougherty. He was called out for runner interference, but the damage was done as Dougherty was knocked hard to the ground.

He remained on the ground for a couple of minutes before leaving the field with the assistance of the trainers. He did not return to the game.

South Hadley took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth with three unearned runs off Rozak to make the final score 5-0.

Plymouth North finished the season with a record of 18-8. Wrapping up their high school baseball careers were team captains Connor Follette, Alex Rozak, John Myette, Jamie Dougherty and Cody Holmes as well as classmates Jake Stearns, Jimmy Mitchell, Pat Horgan, Ben Waltuch, Vinny Tavernelli, Joe Kingsbury, Jimmy Burke and Jamie Delano.

Season continues for Murphy

The high school season continues to roll on for Plymouth North shortstop David Murphy. The senior-to-be was chosen to play in the MBCA Junior Select All-Star Game Sunday and made the most of his trip. He was 1-for-3 at the plate and made several nice plays in the field. He was chosen to play on the Massachusetts All-Star team that will challenge a team from Connecticut this weekend.

(AP) ? Federal regulators said Monday that a botched computer analysis resulted in design flaws that are largely to blame for unprecedented wear in steam tubes at the San Onofre nuclear power plant, but it isn't clear how the problems can be fixed.

The preliminary findings by a team of Nuclear Regulatory Commission investigators were disclosed nearly five months after the seaside plant was shut down following a break in a tube that carries radioactive water. There is no date to restart either of its two reactors.

The problems center on excessive tube wear in steam generators that were installed at San Onofre during a $670 million overhaul in 2009 and 2010. Tests found some tubes were so badly corroded that they could fail and possibly release radiation, a stunning finding inside the virtually new equipment.

Long unknown was what was causing tubes to vibrate and rub against each other inside the massive machines, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Greg Werner, who headed the federal team, said a Mitsubishi computer analysis vastly misjudged how water and steam would flow in the reactors. Also, changes intended to improve manufacturing were never thoroughly reviewed in the context of the generator design, resulting in weaker support around bundles of tubes that contributed to vibration, he said.

The plant's operator, Southern California Edison, could face penalties, while problems at the plant have raised fears of a nuclear accident in Southern California and cut off one of the region's important sources of power.

"The ultimate responsibly resides with them ... because they are responsible for safety," said Regional Administrator Elmo Collins, the agency's top official in the western U.S.

When the generators were designed, the crucial tool Mitsubishi used, a computer model, failed to predict conditions inside the machines and resulted in the tube shaking, Collins said.

Edison agreed with the findings.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday, Collins said missteps in fabrication or installation were considered as possible sources of the rapid tube decay but "it looks primarily we are pointed toward the design" of the generators.

Collins didn't rule out that one or more of the generators might have to be replaced. "We think it's too early to tell," he told reporters.

The findings were released during a three-hour meeting Monday in which officials also faced sometimes-testy questions from local citizens concerned about safety.

Outside the hearing, protesters from Friends of the Earth and other groups critical of the nuclear industry displayed signs that said "Not another Fukushima" and "Shut unsafe San Onofre."

The group on Monday filed a petition asking the NRC to keep the plant offline until the company amends its license to reflect design changes in the generators.

"This is a safety problem," said Friends of the Earth consultant Arnie Gundersen, a former nuclear industry executive and licensed reactor operator who has written several reports on the San Onofre generators. "These changes put the public at risk."

So far, a fix has remained elusive.

"It's not too hard to frame up the problem," Collins told AP. "The answers are very difficult, or they already would have emerged."

The disclosure will rivet new attention on a series of alterations to the equipment design, including the decision to add 400 tubes to each generator and installing V-shaped supports that were intended to minimize tube wear and vibration. According to company documents, each of the replacement generators weighed nearly 24 tons more than the original generators.

The generators were designed to meet a federal test to qualify as "in-kind," or essentially identical, replacements for the original generators, which would allow them to be installed without prior approval from federal regulators.

The agency is reviewing how that was handled.

Inside the guts of the machinery, the original steam generators and the replacements "look substantially different," Collins said.

Company officials and Collins said safety would remain the first consideration at San Onofre. About 7.4 million Californians live within 50 miles of San Onofre, which can power 1.4 million homes.

"These are significant technical issues. They are not resolved yet," Collins said.

The company said in a statement that the Unit 2 reactor likely would remain offline at least through August, pending NRC approval for a restart. It did not project a restart date for Unit 3, where tube damage has been more severe. The company is expected to submit a plan to the NRC later this summer to restart one, or both, reactors, which would have to outline how the company can control the tube damage.

"We know that the outage and the tube wear issue have generated concern in our community," Edison President Ron Litzinger said.

Cracked and corroded generator tubing has vexed the nation's nuclear industry for years.

Decaying generator tubes helped push San Onofre's Unit 1 reactor into retirement in 1992, even though it was designed to run until 2004. The following year, the Trojan nuclear plant, near Portland, Ore., was shuttered because of microscopic cracks in steam generator tubes, cutting years off its expected lifespan.

Westinghouse Electric Corp. weathered a legal battle with five utilities in the 1990s that wanted the company to replace steam generators it manufactured for the Beaver Valley nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania after tubing corroded.

But the troubled San Onofre generators, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, might be a unique case because of the extensive modifications. Only one other U.S. nuclear plant uses Mitsubishi generators, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station, about 20 miles north of Omaha, Neb., but its generators are smaller than those at San Onofre and have not displayed excessive tube decay, federal officials say.

The cause of the unusual wear has been eagerly anticipated, as Edison prepares to submit a proposal to the NRC to restart one or both of the reactors. The company has suggested the reactors would run for a test period under reduced power to reduce vibration.

"The phenomenon that we think causes this tube-to-tube interaction is definitely proportional to the power," Collins said. "At least in some theoretical sense, that might be part of the answer."

The company has announced that 510 tubes have been plugged, or retired from use, in the Unit 2 reactor, and 807 tubes in its sister, Unit 3. Each of the generators has nearly 10,000 tubes, and the number retired is well within the limit allowed to continue operation.

The steam generators ? two in each reactor ? function something like a car radiator, which controls heat in the vehicle's engine. The generator tubes circulate hot, radioactive water from the reactors, which then heats non-radioactive water surrounding them. That makes steam, which is used to turn turbines to make electricity.

The tubes have to be thin enough to transfer heat, but thick enough to hold up under heavy pressure. They represent a critical safety barrier ? if a tube breaks, there is the potential that radioactivity can escape into the atmosphere. Also, serious leaks can drain protective cooling water from a reactor.

The trouble began to unfold in January, when the Unit 3 reactor was shut down as a precaution after a tube break. Traces of radiation escaped at the time, but officials said there was no danger to workers or neighbors. Unit 2 had been taken offline earlier that month for maintenance, but investigators later found unexpected wear in tubes in both units.

Edison has been facing pressure from some nearby communities and anti-nuclear activists that have raised safety concerns, while the company looks for a solution to the tube problem and a path to restarting the plant. The design of the generators is also under congressional scrutiny.

The plant is owned by SCE, San Diego Gas & Electric and the city of Riverside. The Unit 1 reactor operated from 1968 to 1992, when it was shut down and dismantled.
