From An Israeli Kibbutz, A High-Priced Caviar Prized By Top Chefs

A kibbutz in the mountains of northern Israel might seem an unlikely source for some of the world's most expensive gourmet food. But a small farming collective has built itself a lucrative business, supplying some of America's top chefs with caviar that customers pay hundreds of dollars to sample.

At Galilee Caviar in Kibbutz Dan, Israel, there are pools of sturgeon everywhere you look. The massive fish aren't much to look at ? they look like a cross between a seal and a catfish. But they demand a high price ? about $2,500 each, says Yigal Ben Tzvi, the owner of the company.

And each fish is a 10- to 15-year investment, he says. When we visited, it was the day Ben Tzvi began hauling these monsters out of their ponds and checking them for the quality of the caviar inside.

The fish are carefully cultivated and the females selected for osetra caviar production. The whole thing has the air of a hospital operation. The fish are reeled in by net, and then anesthetized in smaller tanks. Biologist Avshalom Hurvitz sits at a small white table, gingerly pulling back tissue with a scalpel to show us what's inside.

"These are the eggs, and they are 3 millimeters in diameter. They have a pale gray color, which is nice. I see no fat tissue here. It means that the yield of caviar will be high," Huvitz says.

As Huvitz pronounces the caviar Grade A, Ben Tzvi smiles. He's proud of the fact that chefs like Eric Ripert serve his caviar exclusively in their restaurants. Ben Tzvi says his caviar is superior because of the mountain spring water in the ponds and the purebred nature of his fish.

"The price in New York, somebody calculated, is $9,400 per kilo," Ben Tzvi says. (Gourmet shop Dean & DeLuca sells 8.8 ounces of the stuff online to the rest of us for just under a cool $1,000.)

Ben Tzvi says he never set out to become a purveyor of caviar. Kibbutz Dan was at the forefront of fish farming in the early 1980s and the 1990s. The caviar business is a subsidiary of Dan Fish Farms. But as the kibbutz shifted from its socialist structure to a privatized model, Ben Tzvi and others explored new business opportunities.

At first, they tried half a dozen fish before settling on sturgeon, imported from Russia as fertilized eggs. "For the first 10 years we grew them for meat, 'cause no one thought of caviar at that time," Ben Tzvi says.

Historically, the world's best caviar came from Russia and Iran. But overfishing of sturgeon in the Caspian and Black Seas has brought the fish to the brink of extinction, and severe quotas cap the legal sale of caviar from those countries now.

By the early 2000s, world caviar prices were rising sharply, and international authorities tried to crack down on fraud by implementing a labeling system.

Ben Tzvi decided to give farmed caviar a try. A few years later, when he started selling his product, the price doubled. Then it tripled. Now 99 percent of the world's caviar comes from fish farms like Ben Tzvi's.

But even though it's a high-priced specialty, caviar is an acquired taste. It's salty, fishy and a bit squishy in the mouth ? and that describes the good kinds.

Galilee Caviar's marketing director, Smadar Ashkenazi, acknowledges that a lot of the caviar market is about branding and perception. She stands in the company's walk-in freezer with an open 8-ounce tin of caviar in front of her. There are about six different locks on the freezer door; Ashkenazi jokes it's guarded like a bank vault.

"In general, I think caviar is more about the experience of eating caviar, so it's about what it makes you feel. Unfortunately, a lot of people, they kinda fear what it's going to be like," she says.

Ben Tzvi says that was him. But naturally, now he's hooked.

Organizations find creative ways to solve problems

Virginia?s nonprofits go far beyond helping the homeless, feeding the hungry or mentoring troubled children.

Innovative programs throughout the state are helping people overcome disabilities, find affordable housing and gain employment.

Here is a sampling of the services of three organizations, Hollins Communications Research Institute in Roanoke, Virginia Community Capital in Richmond and Christiansburg and the Virginia Goodwill Network, which has operations throughout the commonwealth.

Help for stutterers
At just 28 years old, Randy Marcus had accomplished more professionally than many people twice his age. He?d successfully managed Bill Bolling?s 2005 campaign for lieutenant governor and was subsequently appointed Bolling?s chief of staff.

But Marcus felt his lifelong struggle with stuttering was holding him back. He was particularly self-conscious while on the phone or introducing himself in public.

?When I was in one of those big meeting situations where you had to go around the room and introduce yourself, I would make an excuse to get up [and leave the room], so I wouldn?t have to say my name and stutter in front of everyone,? Marcus recalls. ?I felt it was limiting what I could do.?

Marcus had been treated by speech therapists off and on since he was in elementary school with mixed success. In 2006, he attended an intensive 12-day therapy program for stuttering at Hollins Communications Research Institute in Roanoke.

HCRI was founded in 1972 by Dr. Ronald Webster and has been recognized for its pioneering work in research and treatment of stuttering. More than 6,000 clients from 48 countries have gone to HCRI for therapy. Previous clients include Fox News broadcaster John Stossel and Annie Glenn, wife of astronaut and Sen. John Glenn.

?People who stutter are often stereotyped by employers and the general public as nervous, disorganized or mentally deficient,? says Webster, HCRI?s president. ?Yet, there is no mental or emotional flaw that drives the problem.?
HCRI research has discovered that stuttering is a physically based condition. The institute?s therapy program teaches clients how to control the muscles in the throat, tongue, jaw and lips that cause stuttering and uses technology to monitor their progress.

?I learned to talk all over again,? Marcus says. ?It was a completely different way of understanding the challenges stutterers face.?

HCRI is currently developing a ?speech microscope,? a tool that measures the fine details of speech sounds while they?re being made. The better diagnostic information will help researchers improve the precision and effectiveness of therapy for stuttering.

HCRI also hopes to introduce its unique treatment methods to a world audience through the Internet. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are 66 million people in the world who stutter, including 3 million in the U.S.

Despite the popularity of ?The King?s Speech,? the Academy Award-winning 2010 film about the stuttering problems of British King George VI, a lack of funding has slowed HCRI?s expansion plans.

?We have terrible problems trying to raise funds because no one cares about stuttering,? Webster says. ?It?s so misunderstood that foundations, government agencies and philanthropists seem not to have any interest. That?s why I say it?s the invisible problem.?

But for millions of people, like Marcus, stuttering is anything but invisible. HCRI?s therapy program can be life changing.

?Hollins was integral to me breaking through some personal barriers,? Marcus says. ?I couldn?t be happier about going through the experience and what they were able to do for me.?

Community funding source
The reputation of the U.S. banking industry took a beating in the 2008-09 financial crisis. Virginia Community Capital (VCC), a nonprofit community development financial institution, is doing its part to change that.

With locations in Richmond and Christiansburg, VCC is made up of a nonprofit loan fund and a for-profit bank, which focuses on financing projects in four areas: affordable housing, community facilities, neighborhood/business district revitalization and local economic development/job creation.

One of VCC?s recent projects involved providing construction funding to renovate Suburbia Fairfax, an aging apartment complex near downtown Fairfax that?s home to more than 100 lower-income residents. Community Preservation and Development Corp., one of the largest affordable-housing developers in the mid-Atlantic region, is upgrading all 54 apartment units with energy-efficient appliances, low-flow toilets and faucets, and other improvements. The $10 million project should be complete by August.? ?We thought it was important to have some homes in the area for people who were not the wealthiest,? says Tim Westrich, CPDC?s real estate development officer.

Other VCC-funded projects include a new community health-care center in Floyd County, a senior adult day-care center in Richmond and an expansion of plastic tubing manufacturer Essel Propack?s plant in Danville.

During the past five years, VCC has helped build or preserve more than 3,800 affordable housing units and created or retained more than 1,100 jobs.? ?All of the work we do is mission-focused,? says Jane Henderson, VCC?s president and CEO. ?With everything we put together as far as a financing packaging, there?s always a good, warm-hearted story that goes along with it.?
Putting people to work
There?s much more behind Goodwill?s storefronts than castoff clothing and second-hand furniture. Those $5 sweaters and $1 paperback novels ultimately put people to work.

?Our model is we sell those clothes [and other items] to help people become self-sufficient through the job-training programs we do,? says Jim Shaver, vice president of marketing and development for Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, one of six organizations that make up the Virginia Goodwill Network. ?Everything we do is about work.?

In 2011, VGN was responsible for generating about 7,500 jobs and almost $13.3 million in tax revenues to Virginia and its localities. VGN?s overall annual economic impact in Virginia was $470 million, according to the Elliott D. Pollack research organization.

Henrico County resident Lenny Abele is one of the job seekers who have found work thanks to Goodwill. He was out of work for two years after he suffered a traumatic brain injury during a vehicle crash.

Through Goodwill?s Supported Employment Vocational Services program, Abele was hired to do custodial work at a Richmond courthouse. In April, he accepted a new job with ABM Janitorial Service in Richmond.

?This company puts him in a position where he?s doing some things he knows well, but he may also have some advancement opportunities in management,? says Taylor Greene, manager of the Goodwill program.

The Supported Employment program provides intensive, ongoing job-placement and coaching services to individuals with disabilities.

?Goodwill helped me 100 percent,? Abele says. ?I?m glad to get back into the work force. Just having money in my pocket means the world to me ? being able to help my better half with the bills means the world to me.?

Many of Goodwill?s services for job seekers are available free-of-charge. In the Richmond and Hampton Roads areas, Goodwill operates five employment centers that offer classes, career planning, r?sum?/interview preparation, job fairs, labor market information and more.

?We?ve had a wide array of people using our services, from computer technicians to someone who is an entry-level worker,? says Derby Brackett, VP of marketing and communications for Goodwill Industries Serving Hampton Roads and Central Virginia. ?It?s really based on the need to get a job. That?s really the only qualifier.?

VGN itself also puts people to work in its stores and through contracts with various companies around the state.

In Radford, for example, Goodwill Industries of the Valleys employs four people who build tractor-trailer, sleep-cab components for Volvo Trucks North America. Another 10 people manufacture ?Happy Turtles? for Tetra, one of the world?s largest suppliers of aquarium equipment. (The turtles are made out of a plaster-like material and help clarify aquarium water.) In Christiansburg, four people work for Goodwill?s wood pallet shop, supplying custom shipping pallets to several western Virginia companies.

?Everything behind our retail environment goes toward our mission of ? putting people to work,? Brackett says.?

5 Social Marketing Beliefs That Can Hinder Your Online Business ...

Having regrets is a part of life. There are lots of things that we can all think of that we wish we did sooner than later. One such regret for me is all about social media marketing. Like a lot of other Internet marketers who?ve been in the industry since the Internet Pleistocene, I was skeptical when MySpace, Facebook and Twitter started getting hot. Back then, it was easy to dismiss social media as some online timesink for bored teens who didn?t have much to do. Man, did I ever get that one wrong.

Just a few years after these sites went live, they?ve become some of the most visited sites on the Web. As we all know, wherever traffic piles up, opportunities to market are sure to follow. That?s when I realized that I should have been more open to the idea of marketing my brand on social networking sites before literally everyone and their moms beat me to the punch.

These days, I?m proud to say that I have no more ignorance about the power of social marketing. Still, I see a lot of online businesses out there trying to carve a name for themselves in their respective niches without really trying to make their brand social. While it was possible to succeed in the past with just SEO, PPC and email marketing, ignoring social media these days is like trying to run a marathon wearing a spacesuit ? things can be a lot easier if you were doing things right.

If you?re still on the fence about investing your time, efforts and resources on establishing a viable social media marketing presence, this post is for you. I?ve listed down some of the most notorious beliefs that are limiting your online business success and why you should stop subscribing to them. Here we go:

1. My line of business isn?t appropriate for social media ? It happens especially when you come from a traditional marketing background: you have the impression that Facebook and Twitter are very candid environments where younger people flock to have fun and socialize. You then second-guess how appropriate your seemingly ?serious? products are and you end up deciding that social networks aren?t really the best places to sell your wares. A lot of people tend to have this mindset and as a result, they sell themselves short of the benefits that social marketing can bring.

Cuzin, let me tell you something: no matter how cool or boring a product or a brand is, they all have one thing in common: they?re all born of human ingenuity, creativity and hard work. Each product made and each company built are triumphs in their own respective ways and that means each one has a story to tell.

Telling stories, of course, is a very human thing to do. At the end of the day, social networks are all about exactly that: being human in the Interwebs. Remember the stories that your brand can tell and let people know about them in your social media channels. Even if you?re selling garbage cans or paper towels, I?m sure there?s a cool story or two that people will gravitate to. This helps you increase brand awareness, engagement and loyalty ? intangible factors that helped build the world?s most successful enterprises both online and offline.

2. My target audience isn?t on social media ? This is a belief that I hear a lot about from business-to-business (B2B) marketers. Their conviction seems to hang on the premise that they?re selling stuff to businesses and not to actual customers; corporations don?t log on to Facebook and Twitter, so in their minds, it?s probably not worth their time.

Not really. I get the fact that when you?re in the B2B marketplace, you?re selling your products to companies like yours, but keep in mind that buying decisions are still made by PEOPLE and most people who use the Internet these days have AT LEAST one active social media profile that can be exposed to your efforts. Ultimately, even if you?re selling to businesses, a good social media presence allows you to reach out to people that guide companies which buy your goods.

3. I?d rather focus on other marketing media ? It?s a standard practice for companies to pour in thousands, tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on their online marketing campaigns. The standard spending list usually has a large allocation of cash and manpower for SEO, PPC and banner advertising. Social media marketing often ranks as one of the least-prioritized areas when it comes to the distribution of resources because business decision-makers feel that the more visible and measurable traction comes from other promotional avenues.

Thing is, why do you think mega corporations such as Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Corning and a host of others are building entire DEPARTMENTS of social media specialists who are working day in and day out to execute their social marketing strategies? It?s pretty plain to see: they?ve seen what social media can do, what kind of potential it still has and how it can help them in the long run to stay dominant in their respective industries. Social media not only creates positive awareness and a place where you can interact with your prospects: it also serves as a big time synergy for your other media campaigns.

Take for instance the case of SEO: Google and other search engines are well aware that social media is a prime mover and shaker of what goes around on the web. They also view social media as a prime signal of what?s popular and what?s not. In this light, search engines have openly admitted that social signals are now part of how they calculate their keyword rankings and what appears in their search results. In short, doing a good job in social media gives your SEO campaign a huge boost.

Banner ads and PPC ads also benefit from the awareness and familiarity that good social media campaigns bring to the table. Being familiar to a brand or product makes your target customers less hesitant to click on ads that point to your landing pages. This improves your click-through rates and increases both traffic and conversions. Remember, it takes at least seven exposures to an advertising message before the average consumer really starts to make a decision on whether to buy from you or not. Adding social media to that mix of exposures helps you convert better in the bigger picture.

4. I just need to post, like and comment, right? ? Uh, not really. Simply putting up a page and randomly posting stuff isn?t what I?d call a social marketing strategy. For starters, you need to understand that your social media profiles are extensions of your official website outside of its domain. Therefore, you should treat it with as much commitment and responsibility as you would your own webpages. Make your design close to your official sites?, upload your logo, post a link to your home page in the contact information and display other details that will let your crowd know that you?re running a legit business.

More importantly, make your profiles a hub that will keep your audience?s interest levels high. Share photos, videos, announcements and even useful tips and messages that your prospects can draw value from. You may want to keep things professional in your social media pages, but be friendly and approachable, too. You?ll want your audience to be able to voice out their thoughts about you and your brand so you can engage them and help them out if they need anything. These may look like simple things, but they go a long way in galvanizing a dynamic relationship between you and your desired customers.

5. Social media traffic is low-quality traffic ? Some marketers like to believe that social media click-through traffic is low-quality, unmotivated and hard-to-convert. They feel that Facebook is not a place where people buy, but a place where people come in to get social and interact with their friends. While I think that this argument is a legitimate one, I?m a big fan of testing things before I declare them as gospel truth. In the case of social media traffic, I was SHOCKED with what I saw from my traffic analysis reports.

It showed that the clicks I got from Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites were among the purest, highest-quality visits that my blog has benn receiving. In fact, of the thousands of visits that I get from social media each month, none of them have bounced off my pages. If you?re not familiar with the jargon, a bounce happens when a visitor enters your website, lands on a page, then exits without checking your other pages. Google Analytics showed me that my social media visit portfolio had a bounce rate of 0%, meaning everyone who was driven to my site by social media clicked on a link and went on to read other content. As you probably know, a low bounce rate is a hallmark of a good degree of user engagement and having engageged visitors means you?ll have an easier time getting them to heed your calls to action when it?s time to get some conversions going.

Essentially, what this proves is that social media is an excellent place to distribute your content. People who click on the links that you share often carry a good amount of interest in them because they?re familiar with who you are and they have a nice degree of trust for your brand. More than anything else, these qualities matter the most when leveraged for commercial purposes.

Ho-kay, cuzins, these five beliefs are the biggest offenders when it comes to misleading marketers from the goldmine that is social marketing. If you?re hanging on to any of them, it?s time to wake up and smell the coffee. Social media is here to stay and it can be your best platform for making your mark in your niche of choice.

Legal versus Medical Education and some blatant 'crowdsourcing'

In many posts on the state of legal education and the legal profession (on this blog and others) I've seen repeated references to medical education. While I imagine that there exist certain "apples and oranges" aspects to this comparison, it is intriguing. However, I am going to state something that I think might apply to a lot of people - that is, while I have a vague notion of what occurs in medical education (from TV and movies), I feel that I don't really know enough about it to make proper comparisons to legal education (something on which I have experience from both sides of the podium).

Therefore, my purpose here is to blatently 'crowdsource' this information. I have a few questions (ok, a lot of questions) posted below for folks who have experiences with medical education (preferably first-hand, but second-hand is ok too). In the best case scenario we might get some JD/MDs to weigh in on this matter.

If there is any interest, I'd be happy to share my comparative experiences as a new lawyer vs. political science PhD grad (and perhaps fellow guest prawfs blogger Bob Howard can chime in on this)? - although there may not be a great market for that discussion? ;-)

1) How difficult is it to get into medical school? (gpa, % test scores, etc.)

2) How much does it cost to go to medical school? (per yer tuition for private/public; how many years do you pay full tuition, etc.)

3) Um, what happens in class? 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year, etc.? How are you tested/graded? Is it very competitive (e.g. backbiting) or is it 'everyone's a winner'?

4) What are faculty teaching loads? How are they evaluated for rank/tenure (research; teaching evaluations) ? Are rank and tenure the same as in law and/or other fields (e.g. assistant, associate, full)? How are faculty recruited? What is faculty worklife like? Do they make significantly less than non-faculty doctors?

5) How important are grades for medical students in getting jobs? Is there a significant split (as there seems to be in law) between the salaries for the top 15% of the class (or top 15 law school) and the rest? What else matters?

6) How much do doctors make after they begin private practice? Five years out? Ten years out? Is there a large gap between pay for rural vs. urban areas?? (Related to question #3 please discuss salaries during the residency years - this question is about after all of that)

7) How mobile are medical degrees/licenses? How difficult is it to start a practice in another state?

8) How hard is it to get a job as a doctor as a new graduate?

I know a couple of things Med and Law Schools have in common: they do not require of entering students much competency in STEM and, in the 3-4 years they pretend to teach the student, they do nothing to remedy the situation. Surprisingly, the English Language skills of the students do not seem to be that much better.

The obfuscating prose of lawyers is legendary, but try reading anything a doc or nurse writes, whether in the NYT or in a professional journal, and you will see numerous instances of "at risk for [some disease]" where "at risk of [some disease]" would be the proper form. These are folks who are missing some serious processing between ear and tongue.

It is disastrous for this country that so many of POTUS, COTUS and SCOTUS are drawn from the miserable pool of law-school grads, most of whom have taken undergrad degrees in mickey-mouse majors like History, Philosophy, English and International Affairs. That accounts for the fact that only Breyer of 9 on SCOTUS, only some 8 of 535 in COTUS, and nobody since Carter as POTUS has shown any sophistication when it comes to STEM.

BOSTON (AP) - Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine called out the Tampa Bay Rays' coaching staff a day after the teams were involved in a benches-clearing scrum.

Valentine said the Rays' staff escalated the tense situation in the ninth inning of Tampa Bay's 7-4 win on Friday night after Red Sox reliever Franklin Morales hit Luke Scott on the right leg. He called their actions as "unprofessional."

"I thought their coaches were really aggressive, as a matter of fact I took offense to the aggressiveness of their coaches." Valentine said. "I thought it was really unprofessional. I was really proud of the way my coaches and what they were trying to do, what they were supposed to do in those situations.

"(The Rays coaches) seemed very immature and out of control," Valentine said. "Coaches are supposed to stop those things from happening and their coaches were agitating, aggravating, and instigating the situation."

Rays manager Joe Maddon was asked a few different times to comment on Valentine's accusations, but avoided it by specifically praising Boston's players.

"I covered everything I wanted to cover on that last night," Maddon said. "The thing I want to cover today is how much respect I have for the Red Sox players. I've been doing this for seven, eight years in the American League East and I have a strong feeling for the professionalism of the Red Sox players during that time - guys like (David) Ortiz and (Dustin) Pedroia and (Kevin) Youkilis and (Josh) Beckett, who's pitching tonight. My respect goes out to them.

"As we move this thing forward, I think we have that kind of respect with this group here. These players have come here to play baseball. We come here to play hard every night," Maddon added. "We've come to think about it as the `Rays way' of doing things."

Benches cleared after Morales threw behind DH Luke Scott with the first pitch of an at-bat and hit him on a 3-1 pitch. Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia stepped in front of Scott as he was looking out at Morales when the benches and bullpens emptied. There was a lot of pushing and shoving along the first base line that carried over behind home plate before order was restored.

Boston pitching coach Bob McClure and bench coach Tim Bogar were noticeably in the middle of things with Rays players.

Afterward, Maddon said of the Red Sox's actions:

"That's truly somebody flexing their muscles on the other side and they need to put them in their back pocket and understand they can hurt their own team for something like that," Maddon said. "To be really carelessly incompetent on their side and truly try to hit someone and throw behind somebody and hitting them in the leg for all the wrong reasons eventually they can get their own guys hurt. That was ridiculous. It was absurd, idiotic. I'll use all those words.

"That was ridiculous. It was absurd, idiotic." He later said the video would show who wanted Morales' action to take place.

Now, we're not saying Google's elite are actually aliens managing human social affairs, but if you were our reader Ben who ran into a crew of Project Glass-equipped Googlers breaking for drinks at a Los Gatos wine bar, it might seem like a possibility. Beyond filing tons of paperwork, the team is clearly expanding quickly and most recently took part in the Google+ photographer's conference to show off what POV pictures and video (even if that's most of the functionality so far) could add to the world of photography. They wouldn't let Ben try on a pair, but Vic Gundotra reiterated that it was positioned as not to interfere with conversations, and make images appear to be floating in front of your eye. There's video of the photography presentation after the break (jump to about 45 minutes for the first person pics and video), as well as a few more pictures on Google+, but we'd keep a pair of special black sunglasses and bubblegum handy just in case.

Boston, MA Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers have found that detailed knowledge about your genetic makeupthe interplay between genetic variants and other genetic variants, or between genetic variants and environmental risk factorsmay only change your estimated disease prediction risk for three common diseases by a few percentage points, which is typically not enough to make a difference in prevention or treatment plans. It is the first study to revisit claims in previous research that including such information in risk models would eventually help doctors either prevent or treat diseases.

"While identifying a synergistic effect between even a single genetic variant and another risk factor is known to be extremely challenging and requires studies with a very large number of individuals, the benefit of such discovery for risk prediction purpose might be very limited," said lead author Hugues Aschard, research fellow in the Department of Epidemiology.

The study appears online May 24, 2012 and will appear in the June 8, 2012 print issue of The American Journal of Human Genetics.

Scientists have long hoped that using genetic information gleaned from the Human Genome Project and other genetic research could improve disease risk prediction enough to help aid in prevention and treatment. Others have been skeptical that such "personalized medicine" will be of clinical benefit. Still others have argued that there will be benefits in the future, but that current risk prediction algorithms underperform because they don't allow for potential synergistic effectsthe interplay of multiple genetic risk markers and environmental factorsinstead focusing only on individual genetic markers.

Aschard and his co-authors, including senior author Peter Kraft, HSPH associate professor of epidemiology, examined whether disease risk prediction would improve for breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis if they included the effect of synergy in their statistical models. But they found no significant effect by doing so. "Statistical models of synergy among genetic markers are not 'game changers' in terms of risk prediction in the general population," said Aschard.

The researchers conducted a simulation study by generating a broad range of possible statistical interactions among common environmental exposures and common genetic risk markers related to each of the three diseases. Then they estimated whether such interactions would significantly boost disease prediction risk when compared with models that didn't include these interactions since, to date, using individual genetic markers in such predictions has provided only modest improvements.

For breast cancer, the researchers considered 15 common genetic variations associated with disease risk and environmental factors such as age of first menstruation, age at first birth, and number of close relatives who developed breast cancer. For type 2 diabetes, they looked at 31 genetic variations along with factors such as obesity, smoking status, physical activity, and family history of the disease. For rheumatoid arthritis, they also included 31 genetic variations, as well as two environmental factors: smoking and breastfeeding.

But, for each of these disease models, researchers calculated that the increase in risk prediction sensitivitywhen considering the potential interplay between various genetic and environmental factorswould only be between 1% and 3% at best.

"Overall, our findings suggest that the potential complexity of genetic and environmental factors related to disease will have to be understood on a much larger scale than initially expected to be useful for risk prediction. The road to efficient genetic risk prediction, if it exists, is likely to be long," said Aschard.

"For most people, your doctor's advice before seeing your genetic test for a particular disease will be exactly the same as after seeing your tests," added Kraft.

Still, Aschard and his co-authors recommend further study of gene-gene and gene-environmental interactions because it can provide important clues, if not about disease risk, at least about disease causeswhich could in turn lead to improved treatment and prevention strategies.

Marilyn Cornelis, research associate in the Department of Nutrition at HSPH, was also a co-author on the study.

Boston, MA Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers have found that detailed knowledge about your genetic makeupthe interplay between genetic variants and other genetic variants, or between genetic variants and environmental risk factorsmay only change your estimated disease prediction risk for three common diseases by a few percentage points, which is typically not enough to make a difference in prevention or treatment plans. It is the first study to revisit claims in previous research that including such information in risk models would eventually help doctors either prevent or treat diseases.

"While identifying a synergistic effect between even a single genetic variant and another risk factor is known to be extremely challenging and requires studies with a very large number of individuals, the benefit of such discovery for risk prediction purpose might be very limited," said lead author Hugues Aschard, research fellow in the Department of Epidemiology.

The study appears online May 24, 2012 and will appear in the June 8, 2012 print issue of The American Journal of Human Genetics.

Scientists have long hoped that using genetic information gleaned from the Human Genome Project and other genetic research could improve disease risk prediction enough to help aid in prevention and treatment. Others have been skeptical that such "personalized medicine" will be of clinical benefit. Still others have argued that there will be benefits in the future, but that current risk prediction algorithms underperform because they don't allow for potential synergistic effectsthe interplay of multiple genetic risk markers and environmental factorsinstead focusing only on individual genetic markers.

Aschard and his co-authors, including senior author Peter Kraft, HSPH associate professor of epidemiology, examined whether disease risk prediction would improve for breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis if they included the effect of synergy in their statistical models. But they found no significant effect by doing so. "Statistical models of synergy among genetic markers are not 'game changers' in terms of risk prediction in the general population," said Aschard.

The researchers conducted a simulation study by generating a broad range of possible statistical interactions among common environmental exposures and common genetic risk markers related to each of the three diseases. Then they estimated whether such interactions would significantly boost disease prediction risk when compared with models that didn't include these interactions since, to date, using individual genetic markers in such predictions has provided only modest improvements.

For breast cancer, the researchers considered 15 common genetic variations associated with disease risk and environmental factors such as age of first menstruation, age at first birth, and number of close relatives who developed breast cancer. For type 2 diabetes, they looked at 31 genetic variations along with factors such as obesity, smoking status, physical activity, and family history of the disease. For rheumatoid arthritis, they also included 31 genetic variations, as well as two environmental factors: smoking and breastfeeding.

But, for each of these disease models, researchers calculated that the increase in risk prediction sensitivitywhen considering the potential interplay between various genetic and environmental factorswould only be between 1% and 3% at best.

"Overall, our findings suggest that the potential complexity of genetic and environmental factors related to disease will have to be understood on a much larger scale than initially expected to be useful for risk prediction. The road to efficient genetic risk prediction, if it exists, is likely to be long," said Aschard.

"For most people, your doctor's advice before seeing your genetic test for a particular disease will be exactly the same as after seeing your tests," added Kraft.

Still, Aschard and his co-authors recommend further study of gene-gene and gene-environmental interactions because it can provide important clues, if not about disease risk, at least about disease causeswhich could in turn lead to improved treatment and prevention strategies.

Marilyn Cornelis, research associate in the Department of Nutrition at HSPH, was also a co-author on the study.

Looks like rumors of major cost-cutting measures at HP are true: the company along with its fiscal Q2 results has just outlined plans to slash 27,000 jobs by the end of its fiscal 2014. The drop, or about eight percent of its workforce, is being offered an "early retirement" if it doesn't want to wait to be let go involuntarily. The move is intended to streamline HP's operations and save between $3 billion to $3.5 billion a year by the time the cuts are done. As for the results themselves, they explain all too clearly why the cuts are inbound: HP 's profit dropped a massive 31 percent to $1.6 billion, and its revenue dropped three points to $30.7 billion. CEO Meg Whitman touted the results as exceeding an earlier glum outlook, but with the enterprise, printer and services groups all dragging the company down, it's clear that HP is in the same boat as a struggling Dell.
