iCookbook
By Rosa Golijan
The kitchen's a messy place and your favorite cookbooks probably have the stains to prove it. But what if you're using an iPad to look up recipes? How on earth will you keep your precious gadget from becoming collateral damage?
Simple: By flipping through the pages of a virtual cookbook with voice-commands, instead of touching your iPad with greasy hands.
Of course, the iPad doesn't offer something like Siri,?the clever personal assistant feature built into the iPhone 4S (and it wouldn't make a difference if it did?? because Siri doesn't interact with third-party apps) so you'll have to use an app such as iCookbook.

iCookbook's been around for a while ??and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store for five bucks?? but it just recently received an update which enables a neat seeming voice-control feature.?Thanks to this feature you can tell your iPad when you're ready to move on to the next step in a recipe, check timers, view notes, and so on.

How well does the voice command work though? In my case ... not so well. Perhaps it's the fact that I've been spoiled by Siri's ability to understand me even when I mumble or perhaps it's just my soft, squeaky voice, but I couldn't get iCookbook to accept any of my voice commands. (And yes, I did make sure that toggled the feature on.)
Your luck may vary with iCookbook's voice command feature, but frankly the app's pretty decent without it, too. There are?over 2,000 well-organized recipes with instructions so simple that even I could follow them while half-asleep. (Note: Cooking while half-asleep is probably a bad idea. Drink some kind of caffeinated beverage first.)
