Unrestored Citroen Sahara sells for record $142,500 | Hemmings ...

To provide context, let?s start out by describing this car. It?s a 1965 Citroen Sahara. If you think it looks like a 2CV, you?re absolutely right. Only there?s a difference. The Sahara was a four-wheel-drive variation on the 2CV, which required a pair of 425cc engines to be installed, the second one at the rear. The Sahara could operate on a single engine if need be, both controlled through dual hydraulic clutches. Just 694 of them were built, most purchased by Spanish police or used by rescue teams in the Alps.

Not many survive, and here?s the proof. At its very unique auction of unrestored vehicles, held at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia, Bonhams offered this complete but raw Sahara, the eighth from last produced by Citroen. It was bought new off the display floor at the 1965 New York Auto Show by Alexis du Pont, whose family used it for noodling around their estate on Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island. It still wore its original Michelin tires and had an honest 6,000 kilometers showing. The Sahara sold for ? are you ready? ? $142,500, an unchallenged world record for one of these very basic cars.

The Bonhams Simeone sale, described as ?the first ever auction to promote the concept of preservation of collector cars,? was one of the most interesting auctions we?ve attended in a long time and took in a total of less than $3 million. We?ll have full coverage coming up in both Hemmings Motor News and Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car.
