BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Spain is searching for a striker to lead the team against Venezuela on Wednesday in its last match before coach Vicente del Bosque names his squad for the European Championship.

With all-time top scorer David Villa injured and struggling Chelsea striker Fernando Torres dropped for the first time in five years, Del Bosque has turned to Athletic Bilbao's Fernando Llorente and Valencia's Roberto Soldado for the friendly at La Rosaleda Stadium in Malaga.

Villa and Torres may still make the squad for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine. But if not, Wednesday's game could be a tryout for a starter come this summer when Spain aims to become the first World Cup winner to defend its European title.

Llorente and Soldado have each scored 20 goals in all competitions for their clubs this season, but questions remain over who is the better fit for Spain's passing game modeled on Barcelona's style of play.

"We know that when an important player falls from the team, someone else benefits," Del Bosque said. "Although we have experimented with playing without a pure striker, we always have someone up front; Negredo, Torres, Llorente ... this variety is positive for us."

While Spain's stock of strikers diminished more when Sevilla's Alvaro Negredo was ruled out on Monday with a muscle injury, Del Bosque will likely compensate by loading his starting 11 with creative attacking players.

Del Bosque can choose from Barcelona's Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas, Manchester City's David Silva, Chelsea's Juan Mata and 19-year-old Bilbao forward Iker Muniain, called up to his first senior squad.

The former Real Madrid manager is one goal away from matching Javier Clemente as the coach who has guided the national team to the highest number of goals. Clemente, the current Sporting Gijon coach, saw Spain score 126 goals in 62 games from the sideline. Spain has scored 125 goals in 51 games since Del Bosque took over following its 2008 European title.

Venezuela will be looking to avenge its 3-0 loss to the world champions last summer at home in Puerto La Cruz. That was the last friendly Spain won. While winning all eight of its qualifying matches for the upcoming European Championship, Spain has drawn with Costa Rica and lost to England and Italy since then.

"Years ago Venezuela wasn't a major team and now it is vying to classify for the World Cup," Del Bosque said. "Venezuela is a good rival for us considering what lies ahead."

Malaga striker Jose Rondon will lead Venezuela along with Nicolas "Miku" Fedor, who also plays in Spain's topflight for Getafe.

Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta, who was born in Venezuela to Basque parents, is doubtful with a left foot injury.

After Del Bosque releases his final squad in May, Spain will play a warmup against China and at least one other friendly before heading to the European Championship from June 8-July 1.

The images of nearly every major stretch of road taken by Google's Street View team and the snapshots we capture with our smartphones may soon be all we need to navigate the world, according to an Australian researcher.

That is, we can ditch the expensive satellite and computer technologies that power modern GPS systems and rely on low-resolution pictures instead, Michael Milford, an engineer at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, explained.

The system was inspired by his research on how rats get around.

"Rats (and many insects) are amazingly capable navigators with quite 'poor' vision, much 'worse' than a human," Milford wrote to?me in an email. "While we may see up to 100 megapixels, a small insect or rodent might only see a few thousand pixels with their eyes. The system uses similarly small images."

How it works
Milford envisions building a visual guidance system that combines a database of images stored on a local hard drive and some mathematical algorithms.?

The system starts by testing thousands, or millions, of hypotheses about where it is and then tests them again and again by comparing what it sees to the images in the database.?

So, say you're in the kitchen at your office. The system would look around and see a microwave and fridge, noting you're in a kitchen. If you then step outside into the hallway, it would match the images to an existing image of the corridor in the hard drive and test the hypothesis you're at the office.?

"It would also test the assumption that you're in the car park, in a restaurant, etc. ? millions of other locations. As you move around the environment a bit, the number of plausible hypotheses will drop like a stone until there is only one left," Milford explained.

How it compares
Gadgets such as the iPhone have brought GPS to the masses. As many of us have learned, we can be just about anywhere and with the tap of a screen find out almost exactly where in the world we are.?

The behind the scenes wizardry that makes this happen is a combination of location signals beamed down from satellites and some assistance from data contained in the cellular network that allows our phones to work.

One advantage to this system is we don't, usually, have to move around for the satellites and cell towers to tell our smartphone where it is. But all this technology costs money and is sometimes unreliable, especially in big cities where tall buildings can scramble signals, according to Milford.

His approach, dubbed SeqSLAM (Sequence Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), doesn't need access to external data to work.?

"The beauty of using small images is that you can store the entire world's road network on a standard hard drive, without needing access to the 'cloud,'" he said.

What's more, he added, combined with so-called "dead reckoning" navigation?(how sailors plotted their course through uncharted waters), would allow "some ability to keep track of where you are in a place with no existing data."

"And that data would then be uploaded to the central database for the next person to use."

Months after researchers reported that they measured neutrinos traveling faster than light, they're finding that the incredible result may have been due to a bad connection rather than a violation of Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity.

The potential instrumental glitches, first reported today by ScienceInsider's Edwin Cartlidge, is due to be addressed on Thursday in a statement from the OPERA Collaboration, the group behind the controversial neutrino-beam experiments.

Last year, the OPERA team made ultra-precise measurements of how long it took for neutrinos to make the 450-mile (732-kilometer) trip between the CERN particle physics lab on the French-Swiss border and Italy's Gran Sasso National Laboratory. When they took the speed of light and a wide variety of other experimental factors into consideration, they determined that the neutrinos arrived 60 nanoseconds before they should have.

If the results were to stand up, they'd mark the first failed test for Einstein's century-old theory. That's one reason why researchers found them so hard to believe, even though a repetition of the experiment yielded the same results. The OPERA team has been reviewing the entire experiment, and several other research groups have been trying to replicate it. A key concern has been the Global Positioning Satellite system used to clock the neutrinos' transit time. The measurements are required to be so precise that the relativistic effects of Earth's gravitational field on the GPS system had to be taken into account.

Now sources familiar with the OPERA review say scientists have identified two potential problems with the experimental apparatus. One has to do with a fiber-optic connector that sends a GPS time stamp to the experiment's master clock. That connector may not have been functioning correctly when the neutrino-timing measurements were made, and as a result, the recorded flight time would be shorter than the actual time. That alone could explain the seemingly faster-than-light results.

Another potential problem has to do with the oscillator that was used to generate the time stamps for GPS synchronization. This problem could have made the flight time look longer than it really was.

The sources I contacted via email declined to be identified because they weren't authorized to speak in advance of Thursday's scheduled statement. One of the scientists said the glitches should not be characterized as "errors," but instead as "nasty instrumental effects."

CERN spokesman James Gillies confirmed that the GPS connector problem was being investigated, but he emphasized that the effects still had to be confirmed. "More beam will be needed before we know for sure," he told me in an email. Tests with short pulsed beams have been scheduled for May.

The involvement of Bob and Harvey Weinstein, the king-makers of awards season, recalls all the Oscar-bait banter that swirled around The King's Speech this time last year. This isn't helped by the backlash against the film led by Kim Novak: in an advert in Variety, she accused its composer of "rape" for sampling Bernard Herrmann's score for Vertigo. Finally, there are accusations that the film is a gimmick, which has tricked BAFTA and Academy members, and which in five years' time will be all but forgotten. But whatever one's feelings about the Weinsteins, or Kim Novak, the point which most needs challenging is the final argument. The stories about people demanding refunds because they didn't know The Artist was a silent film says more about the way the film was marketed that the film itself (the intelligence of said punters is still up for debate). There is nothing about the content or style of The Artist to suggest that the filmmakers are cashing in on recent trends, or that silence is being perceived as the new 3D. Like many films about filmmaking, The Artist is the product of someone with deep-rooted affection for cinema. Michel Hazanavicius chose to tell the story as a silent film because that seemed the most fitting and sensible way to do it. By replicating the dramatic and visual styles of 1920s Hollywood, he situates us in the period more evocatively than any film since Tim Burton's Ed Wood. If you were feeling especially harsh, you could quickly deconstruct the plot of The Artist into a muddle of different melodramas along a similar theme. From this viewpoint, it is essentially a romantic version of All About Eve, or A Star is Born with the genders reversed: a young actor rises at the expense of an established star, against the backdrop of some kind of technical sea-change. The film also bears resemblance to Singing in the Rain, in showing silent actors attempting to survive around the first talkies, and The Jazz Singer in the various technical changes which come with the advent of sound. There are also subtle hints to darker works, in particular Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?: both the attempted suicide and the discovery of the auctioned possessions have a distinctly creepy tone, bringing back rich memories of Joan Crawford duelling with Bette Davis. Although widely referred to as a silent film, The Artist does utilise sound on two occasions. There is the final scene where the two stars perform a dance number and John Goodman's director expresses his approval. But far more effective is the nightmare sequence, where everything and everyone except Valentin can make a noise. This Lynchian sequence takes innocuous, everyday sounds, like a phone ringing, girls laughing or a dog barking, and turns them into weapons against the main character. The scene of the feather landing on the ground and producing a huge sound is as weird and unnerving as anything in Eraserhead. Like many of the films from which it borrows, The Artist is about how Hollywood has mistreated, and continues to mistreat, its stars. We have an image of the Golden Era of Hollywood as one where the stars had all the power, when in fact the studios were still firmly pulling the strings of both actors and directors. The film reminds us that the movie business has always been just that: actors are only worth something when they are in fashion. With the endless supply of young talent drawn to the glamour of Hollywood, it is easy to replace the old guard when fashions change. The message of The Artist is that different generations or movements in an art form can coexist, and it is important in celebrating contemporary filmmaking to remember where cinema came from. The commercial success of The Artist on top of all its awards proves that it is possible to have black-and-white in an age of colour, 2D in an supposed age of 3D, and silent in a world of sound. The pathos is genuine, particularly the scene of the down-and-out Valentin looking at his reflection in a shop window. And the dog, played by Uggie, is very good. The human performances in The Artist are all of a high standard. Both Jean Dujardin and B?r?nice Bejo are charismatic and convincing; they clearly understand the acting styles of melodrama and silent cinema, and so we are spared anything which is self-consciously over-the-top. John Goodman is very good as the cigar-chewing director, and James Cromwell looks the part at Valentin's butler. Special mention should go to the cameo performances of Missi Pyle and Malcolm McDowell: neither is on screen for very long, but both are brilliant physical actors whose slightest move tells you everything you need to know. The Artist is not a perfect film, or the masterpiece that many have made it out to be. The third act drags a little bit, the music is repetitive, and the familiar nature of both its story and characters will leave some feeling they have seen it all before. But it remains a joyous and highly entertaining watch which should not be frowned upon if it wins Best Picture. Like The Jazz Singer before it, future generations may remember it more as an industrial point than for its own merits. All this generation can do is embrace it and enjoy it, and we should feel no guilt for doing so.
