Sweden's ABBA museum to open, but reunion rumors quashed

By Alistair Scrutton

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The catchy tunes, outlandish costumes and shimmering boots that made ABBA a global phenomenon all feature in a new museum dedicated to the band, but rumors the exhibition may presage a reunion by Sweden's most famous export were quickly quashed.

The permanent exhibition within a hall of fame of Swedish pop music opens in Stockholm this week and organizers hope to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually on a pop nostalgia trip.

Visitors will be able to sing along to ABBA hits alongside life size holograms of the group - and then download the images to their web account.

"I would be interested, even if I hated ABBA, about how it actually happened and why," former ABBA member Bjorn Ulvaeus said on Monday at the museum.

Ulvaeus, now a 68-year-old grandfather, rejected suggestions the opening could coincide with the band reuniting. A British bookmaker was taking bets in April on an ABBA comeback after singer Agnetha Faltskog hinted at a possible reunion.

"As you all know we have never reunited," Ulvaeus said. "So I take this opportunity to say now we are not going to either."

ABBA, made up of Ulvaeus, Faltskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson, shot to fame when they won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Waterloo".

To revive their heyday, the museum has a 1970s disco dance floor to practice your moves, audition recordings for a "fifth" member of the band and the opportunity to sit inside the famous helicopter that featured on the "Arrival" album cover.

"RING RING"

A mockup of the old ABBA studio features a self-playing piano connected to Andersson's current music studio - each time the musician plays on it, the piano plays as well.

The museum walls are plastered with newspaper cuttings, fan mail and videos. Visitors can peer into a behind-the-scenes dressing room, admire ABBA's gold and platinum discs and see a reconstruction of the Swedish cabin where they composed songs.

Based on the band's first major hit "Ring Ring", the museum also includes a red telephone. Only the four band members have the number, and they promise occasionally to call it and speak to surprised visitors.

After ABBA, Ulvaeus went on to become a businessman and helped to produce the hugely successful "Mamma Mia!" musical that was later turned into a film. He has been the main ABBA member behind the museum.

ABBA became one of Sweden's biggest exports with hit songs like "Dancing Queen" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)".

The group sold around 370 million records in total and are part of a rich Swedish pop tradition which includes Roxette, Ace of Base, Europe and Kent.

But the museum took a long time coming. Separate plans for an earlier ABBA museum were shelved in 2008.

Stockholm has been struck by a bout of ABBA fever in the buildup to the opening. Visitors to the international airport are greeted by life-size pictures of the group as well as dancing Spitting Image puppets.

Baggage belts have "Gimme Gimme Gimme" emblazoned on the sides.

"I walked with Frida yesterday around the museum and she had a tear in her eye," said museum director Ingmarie Halling, ABBA's former costumer and hair designer from 1977 to 1980.

"Here you follow the footpath of ABBA. But you have to walk gently when you tell someone else's story."

Kraft Foods profit beats Street, shares rise

(Reuters) - Kraft Foods Group Inc posted quarterly earnings that far exceeded Wall Street estimates on Thursday, as increased spending on some of its biggest brands paid off, sending the company's shares higher.

Still, the U.S. maker of Maxwell House coffee, Oscar Mayer lunch meat and Planters nuts stood by its full-year forecast as it expects to continue investing.

"I don't want you to think that we're off to the races in terms of underlying profit and earnings growth," said Chief Financial Officer Tim McLevish.

Net income was $456 million (?293.5 million), or 76 cents per share, in the first quarter, down from $483 million, or 82 cents per share, a year earlier, before the company separated from Mondelez International .

Net revenue rose 2.1 percent to $4.55 billion.

Analysts on average were expecting earnings of 64 cents per share and revenue of $4.48 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company stood by its 2013 outlook for earnings of $2.75 per share on organic revenue growth in line with that of the North American food and beverage market.

Other food companies also reported quarterly earnings on Thursday, including Kellogg , Hillshire Brands and Hain Celestial Group Inc .

"REAWAKENING GIANTS"

With Kraft separated from Mondelez, it no longer has exposure to high-growth emerging markets. It is instead pouring more money into its stable of mature North American brands, such as Velveeta cheese and Jell-O. It described some early successes.

"We're talking about 16 percent growth on Velveeta cheese," said Kraft CEO Tony Vernon. "Who would have thunk it, right, years ago."

He said the company was "waking up sleeping giants" in areas like Kraft salad dressing, Oscar Mayer cold cuts and Miracle Whip to fend off aggressive competitors.

"In select instances, defending our success may also mean getting sharper on price points, to show that we will not tolerate incursions into our market share or irrational behaviour that would disrupt the long-term health of our categories," Vernon said, meaning that the company would not let lower-priced competitors steal market share.

He later qualified his stance, saying the focus is on more efficient spending on promotions, not greater promotions.

Shares of the company rose 1 percent to $51.10 in after-hours trading. They closed at $50.53 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Milford Writing Center: Public Speaking

For some people, just the name of this post would make their heart race and their hands get sweaty. For others, including me, public speaking is a nice opportunity for an easy A. However, no matter how you feel, you have to do it. So just take a deep breath, try to calm down, and prepare, prepare, prepare.

As any Boy Scout could tell you, you should always be prepared. Fortunately, you have a lot of different options for how to prepare. If your project is about a book or a specific topic, read the book or research the topic. You'll be a lot less nervous if you don't have to make stuff up on the spot. Next, organize your thoughts.?Note cards?are usually a good and permitted method that you can use in your speech. Remember to think about your introduction and conclusion, not just the actual content. I usually find an outline most helpful for that, since you can divide it up in advance. If you need to make a visual aid, only put your main points on there so you don't get reprimanded for reading directly off of it. The same should go for your note cards. You can use a little more detail on there, but you shouldn't just read through them. Know your topic well enough that you can elaborate on the ideas you've written.

The next step of preparation is practice. Practice articulating the material, and make sure it fits in any time constraints. Make sure you know the order of your points so you don't accidentally skip around and have to go back. If it makes you feel better, practice it in front of your family or friends. The only way to get more comfortable with public speaking is to do it a lot.

Once you're prepared, you might still be scared. That's understandable but unnecessary. You know what you're going to say and you know how you'll say it, and if you try to stay confident you'll be great. Plant yourself, look your audience in the eyes, and jump right in. Feel fabulous and you'll be fabulous.

Even Vinny Magalhaes can?t believe a judge gave him a round in UFC 159 loss to Phil Davis

At UFC 159 on Saturday night, Phil Davis showed off the best striking of his career. The NCAA Division-I champion wrestler clearly dominated Vinny Magalhaes in all three rounds on the way to a unanimous decision win. However, one of the judges thought Magalhaes won one round, and the score was 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

It was a surprising score. It didn't take anything away from Davis' win, but it was odd enough that Magalhaes spoke up about it.

Davis and Magalhaes talked trash to each other for months before their bout. Magalhaes left the bad blood in the cage, and was able to give himself an honest assessment moments after the loss.
